Pellets

Does anyone remember the pellets that didn't have the skirts on them. They were more like a slug. If so I am looking for some.

What size?

Those would be swaged pellets. Funny you should bring that up. I have plans to make a pellet swager and bullet molds.

You can buy them already made:

This would be easy to make:

The first thing that comes to mind for me is the Sheridan .20 caliber pellets.  I shot a lot of those back in the 70s and 80s.  Here's a picture.

Excellent links Cam!

Yea. That's very close to what I remember shooting Sheridan's. The ones I remember were rounded. I believe they were .177. That was a long time ago though.

Anyway I was wanting to try them in my P30, but after more testing of conventional pellets I found some of them stick in the cylinder so they probably wouldn't work at all. There is definitely a break in period for this gun. I now have it at about 2" groups at 50' using these pellets Fred swears by. I almost tagged a tree rat today at about 70'. If I didn't hit him I certainly got his attention.

The other pic is a slab of Cherry the power company left behind from cleaning up the right of way. I hit it with all eight shots today using the Blue Arrow pellets at approximately 50' free hand. I shot at another piece of Cherry yesterday that was a cross section. the conventional pointed pellets just left grey marks if I managed to hit it form the same distance. My oldest carried it off somewhere with a knife so it's most likely gone forever.

I just thought of something. This type of pellet wouldn't be too difficult to to adapt for a conventional spring mag for a double stack blowback gun... AT FULL AUTO!

Here is the other piece of wood I shot with Daisy pointed pellets at the same distance.

Cam. My .177 nickel plated lead shot from Ballistic Products came today. Here is the pic.

Ok cool. Thanks.
I have a couple of bags coming to me sometime today. I really look forward to seeing it in person.

The pellets look "out of round"/ Is that an optical illusion?

I agree with Cam on the "out of round" statement, from what I can see, those look totally unusable in a BB gun!?!  Would be interested on how many you find that are truly round enough to use! I was hoping to use the .22 size but if they are all mungled up (is that a word?) I may be out of luck...

I put some in a speed loader without screening them. A couple didn't want to go into the mag. I had a few jams in the mag shooting, but I'm sure that was partially because of the stiffer follower spring I have in it for 4k.

I shot the mag over a Chrony for an average around 830 fps with a rifled tactical barrel using 1600 psi. This afternoon I'm going to see if they will fit in an Umarex rotary mag. Doing a spot check with traditional calipers they are pretty consistent at .18 in spite of looking out of round so there may be some illusion, but they are definitely perfect.

Well the lead balls do fit in an Umarex rotary magazine. A few slid right through, but most of them pressed in. Needless to say I will be sticking to Blue Arrow pellets for my P30. BTW. If anyone has this gun they have new genuine Fobus holsters for the real deal on Fleabay for $20. They fit perfectly.

I got my 22lb. order yesterday. I opened one bag (11lb.) today to have a peek at them. I am impressed that they have improved their quality control from what they were 4 years ago. I can barely find a bad pellet that is horribly out of round. That is a HUGE improvement to what they were when we first bought them.
Voices seem to have been heard from us about the screening quality back then.
Still, they will need to be screened further, as I have had to do. Please remember that this lead shot was NOT meant to be used for airguns.
I will screen and weigh a bag tomorrow to get a percentage of usable shot. Looks like there will be a higher percentage than I used to get.
We'll see.

BTW, Parellax's photo IS an optical illusion about how they look. They are rounder that they appear in that photo. But, they do have a lot of "dimpling" that happens from them being tossed around during shipping. Don't expect them to be as "perfectly" round as Gamo lead ball ammo.

Until tomorrow.

Ok, I sorted the last 11lb. bag I had left over from my supply I had bought years ago. Most of it measured below .180". Only about 20% of that bag was in the .180" size. Bunch of deformed pellets.

This new batch I am very impressed with, compared to what I've had. Most of the pellets are right around .180". I didn't measure any bigger than that. I put a handful on a glass picture frame (which is the way I liked to sort out what I was screening. It helps to get out the really out of round pellets). I rolled them around and found very very few if any too terribly out of round or imperfectly plated.
I decided that I don't even need to screen them for all the "junk" I had to before! Excellent.

As long as they fit in my 30 round mags, they are good to go.

It seems that Ballistic Products  may have listened to our past complaints and passed word to Fiocchi and they fixed their quality control.
Well done!

I still will not put this ammo through my Blackbird magazine, but I won't stop using it in my 30 rounders for sure. It really is excellent hard hitting ammo, especially for rodent control.

Only complaint I have is that I weighed the bags before I opened them. They are coming up a bit short on the weight advertised. One bag was 4oz. light, the other was 2oz. light. (with the bag's weight included). Might be because of Fiocchi measuring in kilos over in Italy, but still....

That's very good news mostly. Even being slighted it sounds like you will have more usable shot than back then, but still at four ounces that's a couple hundred pellets. Anyway I'm looking forward to blasting the crap out of stuff with mine. Does anyone know the effective range for tree rats with a similar setup to what I am using?

These appear to be true .177 judging by their weight, and suggested application. Maybe I will try them in my 92FS when I get it. TBK. Does the 92FS have a smooth brass barrel?

Yes it looks like it has a smooth brass barrel.  The best I can gage it is at .176 ID plus a tiny bit.  It felt a little tight to be full .177, but is close.

The Excite ammo rolls through the barrel easily.  It is similar in size to steel BBs at about .173" diameter +-.  It looks like it should shoot fine, but I didn't check out the chamber end to see if there would be any issues, but probably not.

However, the BPI nickel plated will not go through the 92 barrel on its own.  It is too big... At least the several rounds I tried were.
