It can lead to terrible things. The fact is if you don't have one you are not going to be shooting long. As the polymer wears down where the metal release contacts the the mag it progressively rides lower, and lower misaligning the valve body, and breech. As bb's enter the breech at this descending angle over a period of time they plow up metal from the bottom of the breech until no bb's can even make their way through. When you reach this point you will snap the breech threads off into the breech nut trying to remove the barrel because the breech has also mushroomed, and or spin the breech nut out of the polymer guide in the frame.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you don't want to make one I can hook you up. It's not an expensive part, but probably the most important.
