Bug-A-Salt
« on: April 20, 2016, 08:48:37 PM »
It's been a quiet around here for a while so I thought I would provide some filler. I received my Christmas present from my wife a couple of weeks ago. The bugs have been starting to come out down here for a while now, and I certainly haven't made any new friends with them. I actually saw an inch worm waving a tiny white flag in my neighbors oak tree so we are currently in a cease fire.

Now I have turned my attention towards the front on the the Northeast boundary. I have a fortified wooden structure there that has recently come under more than sporadic attacks from bands of Carpenter bees. Most of my efforts have been in vein, but it's still early in the campaign. Today I discovered a new load for my primary weapon. Initial tests seem very promising, but I don't want to give up the ghost just yet. I have a test planned I have been prepping for. The laboratory test results will be released after I have unleashed the full fury of my secret weapon on my adversary.

I need to get one of those!  What kind of range does it have?

About 3' is the max for it to be effective. That gives you about a 3" pattern. I've been trying to put a video together, but it's been pretty chaotic around here lately. Of course I had to try some different projectiles in it. Coarse salt works well. Since I have 5 lbs of silica jell beads  I bought for the compressor I tried some out. They are the really small kind ranging in size from .03 to .05. I have taken out a few Carpenter bees with the beads as well as many other misfortunate bugs that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The beads are just a tad denser than salt. I was actually able to Chrony the gun using coarse salt at around 350 fps. There was a wide deviation though. One shot read 640 fps. I haven't Chronyed the beads, but I expect more consistency when I do. A bb will also roll right down the barrel. I didn't bother to Chrony that, but it left a small dent in the bread pan on the video. I don't think it would be too difficult to make a full auto version with the adoption of airsoft technology.
