The ones I am familiar with, and have made many of them myself, do not screw into the bottom of the valve body itself. They were made to thread into the bottom of the mag body (the steel frame part that the valve body sits on top of) so you could screw it in until the top, flat end of the adapter contacted the seal where the CO2 cartridge tip would normally get pierced and seal. That is located at the end of an expansion chamber that screws into the valve body and through the mag body (frame) to hold the mag head and frame together as well as to provide an additional seal in the valve body.
In the Blackbird it is different as it wasn't made to have a CO2 cartridge IN the vertical mag body.
I have a drawing and pictures I can post when I can get to them.
Those original bulk air adapters were very simple, but did require the CO2 piercing lever and related parts to be removed (they were not needed for the use of HPA or bulk CO2) from the mag body and the bottom hole had to be threaded. It was a 3/8" thread as I recall.
